Witnessing HARD's sold out Odd Future show Saturday, LAWeekly promptly proclaimed Odd Future is "LA's Best Live Act." With an extended set list that pulled from the young collective's dozen-plus mixtapes and albums, the energy was undeniable. If you missed it, here's the recap:
During the set's opening song, "Sandwitches," Tyler The Creator severely injured his foot. He powered through the pain but soon left the stage to be treated by paramedics. Hodgy Beats and Left Brain stepped up with tracks from their wild Mellowhype catalog, and Mike G and Domo Genesis each layed down smooth verses as Syd the Kid kept the beats loud.
Off-stage, Tyler was advised that his foot was broken in multiple places and that he should go directly to the hospital.
He said "Fuck It." Self-bandaged, he hobbled out and helped OFWGKTA give their hometown a show for the history books. R&B heart-throb Frank Ocean appeared to duet on "She". Madness ensued for intense tracks like "Bitch Suck Dick."
Bummer: the injury caused them to postpone the last leg of the tour. Good news: a recovered Tyler & crew will take the stage at the HARD Summer Music Festival on August 6th as scheduled.
Mixtapes and videos have made them a sensation beyond just the rap world, but it doesn't stop there. The Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All caverns run deep; you can dig that shit for years. Look for Hodgy Beats' take on a classic Flying Lotus jam, or Jasper's WTFness on "Bring The Hi Hat In". Study the saga of Earl's indefinite exile, and trip out on the OF design aesthetic.
